Promoting Food as Medicine

FoodTherapyMD is the brainchild Dr. Stacy Mitchell Doyle, MD — or Dr. Stacy as her patients know her. After completing medical training and residency at UCLA Medical Center, Dr. Stacy obtained her board certification in Internal Medicine and set up a private practice in Los Angeles. However, after nearly two decades, Dr. Stacy realized that she was participating in a failing medical system. Her patients were on increasing numbers of prescription drugs, but the cycle of debilitating chronic illness and death wasn’t changed in any way.

It was time for a “re-education of Dr. Stacy.” Thanks to the groundbreaking research of Drs. Caldwell Esselstyn, Joel Fuhrman, T. Collin Campbell, Michael Greger, and Dean Ornish, to name a few, she then began to treat her patients using plant-based nutritional protocols that focused on the inflammatory basis of disease and the healing, anti-inflammatory properties of whole plant foods.

More than 90% of human illness, death, and disability have a root cause of poor nutrition. It is the lack of plant phytonutrients and the consumption of processed foods, animal protein, and processed sugars and oils that lead to chronic inflammation and decreased immune system function. Those then lead to the diseases that often end up killing us the most — such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, and high blood pressure.

We all know the generic advice — eat more vegetables. The biggest obstacle is that modern medicine and medical education do not train physicians and dietitians properly in using nutrition to treat illness. This is due in large part to the detrimental alliances that healthcare professions have formed with the pharmaceutical, agricultural, and processed food industries. Because of these corporate influences, we’re fed a lot of dangerous and conflicting information on what to do and eat to be healthy.

We take the concept of food as medicine to the next level. Not only do we promote whole food plant-based diets for disease management and longevity, but we recognize that phytonutrients, the things that make plant food so amazing, can be tailored to fight specific disease states. Just as doctors prescribe drugs for particular illnesses, your nutritional prescription should carry the same specificity but without the side effects!

FoodTherapyMD also knows that just as the standard, meat-centric North-American diet destroys your body, it is also destructive to the planet. Animal agriculture plays a significant role in climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, water scarcity, deforestation, and antibiotic resistance, as well as issues with animal welfare and cruelty.
